Even You Can Be Organized (No, Seriously, You Can)

So, you’re three envelopes, one rubber-band, and two empty margarine tubs away from being on an episode of Hoarders. Okay, maybe the situation isn’t that extreme, but looking around your house at all the excess stuff makes it all feel a little overwhelming. Lucky for you, Hoarders was cancelled, and getting your house and life organized isn’t the mammoth task you imagine it to be.

If you want to be successful, you’ll have to continually remind yourself throughout the process, Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you set aside a weekend to get your house organized, but continually put that weekend off because the task seems too daunting, you definitely need to break it up into more manageable chunks. This advice will serve you well in most jobs that you put off because of the time and effort needed to complete them. Many small tasks are easier to work through than one big one that feels like it will crush you before you even start.

Where to Begin?

Start small. Work on one room, workspace, or closet at a time. Make that area your goal. Write out a list of these small goals to check off as you complete each one so you can see you’re making progress. Begin with the space that will make the biggest difference in your daily routine. If your family room is out of control with toys, books, magazines, and junk mail strewn from one end to the other and this is where you and your family spend the most time, then start here. Wherever a change from havoc to organization will be most noticeable is the place to begin. Why? Because it’s easier to continue a project and feel motivated to make more progress if we actually see positive results. If we started a diet and lost ten pounds after the first day, we’d be much more likely to stick to it. While that scenario is unlikely, you can make a significant difference in a short time when getting organized.

De-clutter Ferociously

For many, this is the hardest part – throwing things away. Most of us are more packrat than we like to admit, but hanging onto things we never use and may never need again is what got us in this mess in the first place. Get rid of it! You can’t get organized if you have more stuff than you have room to store it.

As you sort through the space, keep a strong trash bag right beside you. Determine the usefulness of each item. Throw away duplicates. Unless the cost of replacing an item in the future, should the need arise, is prohibitive, toss it. If you hang onto every little thing in your house on the off chance you may need it in the future, you’ll never get rid of anything. Purge!

Of course, some items have sentimental value. For a lot of us, too many things have sentimental value. Choose just a few to keep. One place you’ll probably run into this problem is children’s artwork and school projects. How can you ever throw anything away that little Timmy made with his own hands when he was seven years old? Select a few items to keep, like the ceramic hand print, and take pictures to keep of the rest. Pictures can be stored electronically and won’t need the space that 3-D, papier-mâché capital-T-for-Timmy needs. If he’s old enough, have Timmy help you decide what is important to him.

Unless it’s a formal dress or suit, get rid of it if it hasn’t left the hanger in over a year.

Everything Has a Place

Start at home. If you don’t spend half your down time looking for lost items, you’ll have a lot more time to spend with your family. Focus on high traffic rooms – living room/family room – to begin with, and then move on to other spaces that tend to get out of control, like entryways and closets.

If you take the time to teach them how to do their job and give them praise when they do it well, you may find they actually enjoy contributing, especially if it gives you more time to spend together.

Ultimately, you are the only one who can control your schedule and lighten your load. Sometimes you just have to prioritize and say no to any additions that complicate your already busy life. But making a few simple changes can at least make your home time more productive and rewarding.

For the third time in the past three months, a Paterson man has been arrested for the theft of plastic storage bins from area pharmacies.

Jose M. Vazquez, 46 was arrested and charged with theft and possession of stolen property in the Aug. 24 theft. Toyse Ali, 43, also of Paterson, was arrested on the same charges.

Vazquez was arrested for allegedly committing the same crimes on June 9 in Westwood and on Aug. 2 in Bogota, said Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin C. Fox.

Wyckoff Police Patrolman Peter Goodman observed a Ryder rental truck exit the Boulder Run shopping center at 7:20 p.m. and turn onto Godwin Avenue with the rear of the truck standing open, Fox said. “Some of the contents of the truck began to spill out of the rear along Godwin Avenue and they were plastic storage bins that belonged to the CVS Pharmacy in the shopping center.

The truck had about 300 storage bins, plastic pallets and corrugated cardboard inside. The bins were marked with identification from CVS, Walgreen’s and Rite-Aid pharmacies.

The theft of business delivery size storage bins has been on the rise, Fox said.

“They are then brought to recycling centers and sold for plastic recycling,” Fox said. “He’s been arrested three times and clearly these are not the only three times he’s been doing it.”

Fox credited Goodman for observing the thieves in action through an open gate and being aware that the county had put out an alert about the bins being theft targets.

“I credit him with alertness on his patrol,” Fox said.

Bail was set on Vazquez at $5,000 and $2,500 for Ali. Both men were being held in the Bergen County Jail.

For my Father, staying organized was always a challenge.  I guess that’s mainly because he likes to collect junk and never part with it.  His house looks like an antique museum.  However, since I provided him with some heavy duty plastic bins, it looks like a very clean and organized antique museum.  Just because things are old doesn’t mean you need to throw them out, all you have to do is clean up and organize and present them in a neat way and your old junk & belongings won’t bother anyone, just look at my dad for inspiration.

To help teach our children about being organized, and how to be organized, we decided to use some plastic storage bins and containers in various areas of the house. Whenever the kids picked up a new hobby, we'd give them a bin for it. For example, when my daughter Katie started to get into photography, we gave her a plastic bin and told her that this was to be used to hold all of her photography-related equipment. Whenever she'd come home from school, she'd go grab her photography bin and start using the contents for her projects. Whenever she was finished for the night, simply place the film and exposures and even the camera back into the bin and place it in her closet.

When Kenny first started to play basketball, we got him stackable bins and let him know that this was to hold all of his equipment. Kenny and Katie are now all grown up and each have two beautiful children of their own. When you walk into my apartment, the kitchen is immediately on your right.  On the outer perimeter of the kitchen, you will find a clear storage bins sitting on the countertop.  It’s a small bin and it’s located right at the entrance so that when you walk in you can place your belongings right into it.  For me personally, I use this clear bin to hold my car and house keys, my glasses and my wallet.  Every single time I come in and go out, I walk past that clear bin and grab all of my things.  The reason I selected a clear bin was so that it’s easy to see what I’m grabbing.  For instance, on a weekday, I will grab my reading glasses and head to the office.  On a weekend, I’ll grab my sunglasses and head to the beach.  Since I have this clear storage bin sitting right by the door, it’s impossible to forget what I need as I leave the house.

As you move from room to room, you will notice various storage bins strategically placed in specific areas.  The next bin you will find is a slightly larger bin on the floor by the living room couch.  This storage bin is used to hold all of my dog’s toys.  My dog is little, but he sure loves to play with his toys.  He goes into this container and pulls his toys out one by one.  In just a few minutes, all of his toys are scattered throughout the living room.  When he’s done playing, it is very easy to just pick his toys up and toss them back into the bin.  No need to be gently or orderly, just toss the toys into the storage bin and keep on moving.  It helps keep my living room organized, and allows for my dog to always know where his toys are.

The last area I’m going to discuss today is my closet.  I keep a heavy-duty attached lid container in my closet for holding all of my older shoes/sneakers.  Rather than just have a bunch of pairs lying on the closet floor, I simply keep them in a storage container and close the attached lid.  When I know I’m going to need a specific pair, I just open the lid and grab it.  For example, I have one container that holds all of my sporting sneakers like running shoes and baseball cleats.  I have another one for storing all of my day to day, casual sneakers.  Using these plastic containers has really cleaned up my closet and given me a lot of extra room that I completely forgot I had.

My closet used to look like I was a sneaker hoarder.  I just can’t help that I have an obsession with new sneakers.  Even if the sneakers are old, I treat them as if they’re new.  After years of having a messy closet (and an upset girlfriend), I decided to use some plastic bins to get my closet organized and to keep my sneakers safe, clean and secure.  My closet now looks like a professional showroom. 

When you first walk in to my closet, you will find a louvered panel hanging on the closet door.  The panel is full of different color bins that are hanging off of it.  The top row has all red bins and inside of those red plastic bins are my dress shoes.  Each pair of shoes is in its dust protector and placed inside of one of the bins.  Whenever I am getting dressed for dinner or a party, I know to just go to the closet and look through my red bins for the best dress shoes for the night.  At the end of the night, I just come home and kick my shoes off and put them right back where I found them.

Once you get past the door full of dress shoes, you will immediately see my big shelving unit that is full of storage bins.  In those bins you will find all of my basketball sneakers and classic Jordan’s.  Since I’m a big time Jordan collector, I have many different models and some I have in a few different colors.  The way I set up the sneaker storage is by model number.  So on the highest shelf I have three large plastic bins (roughly 30” deep).  In those bins I have the Jordan 1’s, 2’s and 3’s.  In the third bin that contains the Jordan 3’s, I have both the black and the white models.  The shelf below the top one has the same kind of setup, except it is holding the next couple model numbers that I have (in my case, the 4’s, 7’s and 9’s). 

There was once a time when I thought that buying new sneakers and collectible Jordan’s was a quick and easy thing.  Just buy the sneakers, bring them home & throw them in the closet.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that maintaining the order, cleanliness and security of my sneakers is just as important.  Some of these sneakers cost over $200, and if you're not going to take care of them, why would you wait on that long line.  If you're looking for a simple, cost effective and nice looking way to store all of your sneakers and shoes, use the methods I discussed above.

This next photo comes from one of our customers in the firearms industry.  They own a firearms shop and they go traveling across the country attending gun shows.  They contacted us one day and asked us how we can help them store and move all of their products from show to show, as well as how to display their stuff at the show.

One of the most popular (and greatest) shows on television today is Breaking Bad.  Breaking Bad tells you the story of the main character, Walter White, a.k.a. Heisenberg.  Walter White is your ordinary typical chemistry teacher.  He is married and has two children.  He lives by the book and appears as straight edge as you can be.  Then, one day he finds out he is terminally ill with cancer and he loses it.  He starts to worry about how his family will get by once he’s gone, and he comes up with a plan to use his knowledge to cook the highest quality drugs in the country.  His ultimate goal is to make enough money to put his children through college and leave them with a little extra money before he passes.  I won’t get into the whole summary of Breaking Bad, as it is in its fifth season and that would take a while.  What I do want to discuss is how Walter White uses Monster Bins’ attached lid containers in his lab to store his product once it has been cooked.

Parts bins are an extremely economical method for maintaining inventories and keeping track of any important supplies.  If you are no longer concerned with being caught off guard without the necessary supplies, you can spend your time focusing on something more important!  Like I said earlier, people (as well as myself) use these shelf bins at home and at work.  I will give you some examples of how to best use these bins in any setting.

At work, parts bins are going to be a massive help, regardless of what industry you’re in.  Let’s use the HealthCare industry as our first example.  I know that when I go to my doctor’s office, the most important thing to me is how comfortable I feel.  The last thing that I’d want to see is an office that is terribly unorganized.  An unorganized doctor’s office is a scary thought.  Imagine you went in for a sore throat and there were no tongue depressors in the office.  I’d probably never go back.  If this doctor’s office was using our shelf bins, they (or the office manager) would have immediately recognized when their inventory was running low and they could have ordered more.  If the tongue depressors are in stock, I can get the proper treatment, and be a happy patient/customer.  If I’m a happy customer/patient, I’ll be back.  If not, I won’t be back.  That issue could have all been avoided by using some storage bins.

Plastic bins come in a ton of different shapes, sizes, & colors.  Each style can provide you with a unique storage option that will be very helpful while trying to organize your workspace.  When you are trying to decide which storage bin will work best for your office, first figure out exactly where you plan on storing them and how much space is available.

About a week ago I was walking out of my local Starbucks, iced coffee in hand.  I was continuing my walk down the street and I noticed the back door to Starbucks supply room was open and exposed to anyone walking down the street.  What’s the first thing I noticed inside of the supply room?  You got it, attached lid boxes neatly nested inside of each other.  The flip top lids were closed so I can’t tell you what’s inside of these particular bins, but I can guarantee you that these containers are stocked full of important supplies.

The first place I noticed one of our containers was in the sundry shop in the lobby of the Encore.  This particular shop was making use of one of our attached lid containers/boxes.  From what I could gather, they use these containers in all of their facilities to transport supplies and specific stock items from one shop to the next.  So, in this case, they were using the bins to transport all of the candy from the main storage area to the actual store where it will be sold.  Since these containers have attached lids, they are ideal for transporting stock from one area to the next.  Also, these totes are heavy duty. 

Since they’re heavy duty, the Wynn probably also uses them to carry all of the change out of the slot machines.  At the end of the night, when it’s time to empty out the machines, all they have to do is put these containers on a dolly and wheel them from machine to machine.  Once you fill up one of the containers, close the lid and start filling the next.  These bins can be stacked on top of each other once the lids are closed.

In the last two weeks, I have noticed our plastic bins being used at a local Burger King as well as a local Wendy’s (I know, I shouldn’t be eating so much fast food!).  While a fast food restaurant is not where you would expect to find plastic bins, they are certainly useful and beneficial in fast paced fast food world. 

At Burger King, they have stackable monster bins on the counter top at the drive-thru window.  It appeared as though they had 3 bins stacked on top of one another (and the bins were in Burger King’s colors).  The bottom bin had sauces inside of them.  The middle bin had straws and the bin on top of the stack had napkins.  The stackable bins are helpful in a fast food setting because they provide a time and space saving way to help get the customers in and out as quickly as possible.  Since the stackable bins have an open front, the woman working at the drive-thru window can simply reach into any of the three and grab the necessary sauce, straw or napkins.  She didn’t have to waste time going to find the sauces that I asked her for, she just reached right into the bin and threw a couple in my bag.  In fact, I even got her to pose for a picture with one of the bins.

When I was inside of a Wendy’s a few days later, I also noticed that they are using red stacking bins inside of their restaurants.  And just like Burger King, Wendy’s purchased bins in their company color (Red).  At this particular Wendy’s location, they are using smaller stackable bins, and they are using them to hold different items.  They are using one of the stackable bins to hold little salt packets and a different one to hold pepper packs.  The third bin they are using is to hold straws, just like Burger King.  When I walked up to the counter and asked them for barbeque sauce for my nuggets, they pulled a slightly larger plastic bin out from underneath the counter and handed me a few sauces.  I believe they had these bins labeled so they would know which one had the ketchup, which one had bbq sauce and which one had the ranch dressing. 

So, I’m not trying to get repetitive here, but you can see how plastic bins will help you be more efficient, regardless of where or how you plan on using them.  I’m sure none of you thought that bins would be very helpful in a fast food restaurant, but they truly are.  It helps speed up the process of getting customers in and out, and that is critical in many restaurants.

The number one replacement for cardboard boxes is parts bins, or shelf bins.  Parts bins are a very economical option for small to medium sized parts storage.  If you don’t want to have to worry about replacing your storage bin, than you should definitely purchase these plastic shelf bins.  These bins are heavy duty and can easily be washed.  Another great feature is the ability to color code your products.  It’s much easier to locate the exact supplies you’re looking for if the bins are color coded.  This is a common practice in warehouses.

The last place that we use storage bins in our apartment is in the guest closet.  We don’t want all of our shelves and storage space to be filled up with our old clothes or our winter clothes.  When it’s time to shop for new clothes, we always make sure to fill up a storage bin with some old clothes and move them into the closet in the guest room.  When it’s summer time, all of the sweaters and jackets get folded up and stored away in a plastic bin.  The clothes are still easily accessible, if need be, they are just out of the way.

In the two videos that I shot below, you can see the shelving units are on display in the restaurant.  This restuarant decided to use them as part of their decorations.  But the wire shelves are not just there for looks, they're there to serve a purpose. 

In video 1, you will see that the shelving units were set up near one of the bars.  Due to it's close proximity to the bar, they decided to use this shelving unit to hold wine glasses and cases of wine.  The wire shelving units come standard with 4 shelves, but in this case they added some more.

Wire shelving is a great help in a closet.  It doesn’t matter how small or how large your closet is, there is a perfect size of wire shelves for you.  You can get the shelving units with either the standard 4 shelves on it, or you can customize it to have as many shelves as you want.  These shelving systems are easily configured and can hold hundreds of pounds on each shelf.  Believe me, you don’t have enough clothes in your entire house to hurt this shelving unit.  I recommend that you take some measurements of your closet so you know exactly what size will work best for you.
